A note on pack weight: 30 pounds, including water, is a nice goal to shoot for. 40 pounds is heavy, but with a real pack and some determination it's manageable. Consider this when planning what you want to carry for several days in a row.
Gear needed by each of us:
- Backpack capable of carrying your gear (read: an internal or external framepack)
- rain equipment (for your pack, tent, and person)
- Sleeping bag w/ stuff sack
Eating vessel & utensils
- Knife
- Flashlight (headlamps are useful)
- Hiking boots
Socks (several pairs, cotton inner layer & wool outer layer is best for hiking)
water vessels (2L minimum total capacity)
- first aid kit
- trail snacks and food you want
- toiletries
- clothes
- insect repellant
Gear needed in common:
- mealtime food
stove & fuel
- tent(s)
